The Centre For Art & Soul is currently offering performance art classes to children aged 4 to 7 on Saturdays mornings (see calendar). Held in Parkdale at St. John’s Parish Hall,
located at 186 Cowan Ave. Toronto, ON.
The objective is to provide students with an outlet for their huge imagination and innate creativity. We offer time and space for children to explore their own minds, bodies and voices along with themes of personal, community and global consciousness, environmental awareness and awareness of the world around them. Our classes promote self esteem, team building, cooperation and cause and effect.
Whether your child is the class clown and born to be the centre of attention, or if she simply enjoys self expression in a safe environment, we provide young people with tools that can be used in a full spectrum of life situations and choices. The Centre uses a process and not product oriented curriculum, teaching children that the quality of process is more important than the end result. The most important thing is that these programmes open a child’s mind, potentially tap into hidden talent, and can be the most fun they have ever had.
Class Descriptions Acting Monkeying Around! (Early Drama/Drama & Improv) Ages 4 – 7
Drama opens children’s minds to expressing themselves physically, mentally and emotionally. By using drama games, improv activities and storytelling the students have an opportunity to tap into their vast imaginations and creative souls! This 12 – 14 week programme wraps up with an open class where parents are invited to observe exercises and enjoy a short presentation. This programme is a great introduction to acting and theatre while focusing on self expression and fun!
Live At the Monkey Bar! (Early Drama/Drama & Improv) Ages 8 – 13
The Monkey Bar programme offers more of a challenge than Monkeying Around. More sophisticated exercises, scene work and improvisations will help these students learn not only about how they fit in the world of theatre, but also the world around them. We will examine objectives, obstacles and resolution through games and stories and give the kids a chance to have their own voices heard through shared ideas, scene work and an end of programme presentation where family and friends alike are invited to see all the hard work the kids have put in over 12 weeks.
Theatre & Art Combo The Sky’s the Limit! (The Magic of Theatre) Ages 5 – 8
This exciting program combines most of our resources and fuses them together! Using the theatre as our theme, classes in both drama and visual art take our students through the full spectrum of experience and exercise to teach the ins and outs of the theatrical world. Our students not only will participate in drama class: including improv, storytelling, mask, and musical theatre; but also will enjoy an exciting visual art and hands-on component looking at: costume, mask, puppetry, and mixed media art design. The result will be a dazzling collection of projects and performances culminating in our Salon: an open class presentation on the last day. This is the class for the creative child, who loves to imagine and laugh.
