More art history appreciation

by Lisa Kelly on Wednesday, February 22nd, 2012 at 3:32 pm

Sunday Feb. 26th, Multimedia Art For Kids Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Monet’s Water Lilies. The works of the great artists go on and on. There is so much to learn and appreciate about the talents of these people and their masterpieces. We haven’t done any art history since before xmas, and so I’d like to delve back into it. This Sunday’s class we will talk a bit about “Impressionism” and then do our own renditions of Claude Monet’s ‘Water Lilies’.

*Please note: Weekend Drop-in/Drop-offs now alternate between Saturdays and Sundays.

The ‘no plans’ Family Day weekend plan

by Lisa Kelly on Wednesday, February 15th, 2012 at 4:43 pm

Just a wee heads up — our workshops are cancelled this weekend. What better way to rest up and refuel, than to have no plans at all for a Family Day weekend!? Yup, that’s what we thought. Enjoy and savour your time off!

Please be sure to check back next week when our regularly scheduled drop-ins resume on Sunday February 26th. See you then!

We heart artist trading cards

by Lisa Kelly on Wednesday, February 8th, 2012 at 2:44 pm

Sunday Feb. 12th, Multimedia Art For Kids Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Artist Trading Cards. We’ve done ‘em before, but kids just love doing artist trading cards, and what better than to do them with a V-day spin in preparation for Valentine’s Day next Tuesday! Artist Trading Cards have been around for a little while (since 1996) and are sort of the art version of baseball cards. They are even the size of baseball cards and can fit in standard trading card protective sleeves. The workshop will be fun — we’ll use every medium we’ve got – glitter, paint, pastel, googly eyes, and maybe even some of those old-school paper heart doilies!

*Please note: Weekend Drop-in/Drop-offs now alternate between Saturdays and Sundays.

Sundays are FUNdays in February!

by Lisa Kelly on Thursday, February 2nd, 2012 at 8:53 pm

One of the best things about having this business is getting to hang with a bunch of really cool and creative folks who love having fun with kids just as much as we do. This month is chock ‘o block full of great events that we are fortunate to be a part of. For the first 3 weekends in February we’re hangin’ with JUNO NOMINATED Monkey Bunch. I’ll be manning a craft table where the kids will be fooling around with stamps and stamp pads and Ryan will be doing what he does best – entertaining the kidlets before the Monkey Bunch’s BIG performance!

Then, on the last Sunday of the month, we’ll be at Totsapalooza for Small Print’s fourth annual fabulous event – themed this year “Mouse City Calling”. If there’s one thing I’ll never stop loving – it’s a good party – and this month is full of ‘em!

Chalk pastels and a ‘Big Fat Hen’

by Lisa Kelly on Wednesday, February 1st, 2012 at 3:04 pm

Saturday Feb. 4th, Multi-Medium Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Perspective and Pastel. About a year ago, I found a great book at the library called “Big Fat Hen” by Keith Baker. The illustrations are vibrantly drawn with pastels. After doing some research, I discovered that this story has been used by many art teachers – it’s a popular book! So to add some differentiation, I decided to include a bit of theory in my lesson. We’ll talk about perspective – things up close are big; things far away are small, and we’ll also talk about the ‘horizon line’. The children will get to experiment with both oil and chalk pastels (word of warning: the chalk pastels get EVERYwhere, so let’s remember to wear our ‘art’ clothes). The above drawing was done by my son, Julian when he was 6 yrs old. I think it’s gorgeous!

Dragons and Fortune Cookies

by Lisa Kelly on Tuesday, January 24th, 2012 at 5:20 pm

Sunday Jan. 29th, Multi-Medium Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Dragon Art! I have a student absolutely fascinated by all things Chinese. Chinatown, Chinese history, Chinese Art etc. etc… So this one’s for you Malcolm! We’ll be sketching and painting dragons as well as adding in a bit of collage in celebration of Chinese New Year. We’ll also be reading ‘Bringing In The New Year’ and ‘Fortune Cookie Fortunes’ by Grace Lin. It’ll be a great class and I can’t wait to see the marvelous red, gold AND BLUE creations (it is a water dragon this year after all!)

Marvelous mandalas!

by Lisa Kelly on Wednesday, January 18th, 2012 at 3:42 pm

Saturday Jan. 21st, Multi-Medium Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Mandala Art (watercolours and marker): This is a repeat class by request. One little student of mine did this last year with me, but gave his mandala away as a gift. Although at first he felt good in giving away his beautiful piece, he also struggled afterward – sort of wishing he’d kept it. So I said “we’ll do the workshop again!” And why not? I love doing mandalas with little people. Children really create such stunning designs!

A great compliment to the class is the story ‘The Dot’ By Peter H. Reynolds. It’s the perfect book to inspire a discussion about dots and circles and the art of creating mandalas. We’ll watercolour paint our circles first, and then later doodle with pen and ink to add detail to the mandala. Looking forward to another fantastic mandala making workshop!

Winter Holiday Camp Hi-lights

by Lisa Kelly on Monday, January 9th, 2012 at 3:22 pm

We had a BLAST last week for our Winter Holiday Arts Camp. We covered themes like ‘Backwards Day’, ‘Spies & Mysteries’ & ‘Magic Carpet Around the World’. One highlight for me was special guest & kids yoga teacher Janet Williams, of Childrens Yoga Books showcasing her new ‘Yoga Match’ game. She even made a video of the kids enjoying the game. Thank you to all our little campers who joined us. We sure had fun doing yoga, creating art, and just being plain goofy during drama games. Looking forward to the next one!

Snowmen At Night

by Lisa Kelly on Monday, January 9th, 2012 at 2:38 pm

Sunday Jan. 15th, Multi-Medium Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Paint and Tissue Paper Collage: Have you ever built a snowman and discovered the next day that his grin has gotten a little crooked, or his tree-branch arms have moved? And have you ever wondered, “What do snowmen do at night?” Although our winter thus far has been unseasonably mild – no snow yet (?!) – we thought it’d be nice to do an art project based around the story ‘Snowmen At Night’ by wife/husband team Caralyn and Mark Buehner. I’ve recently become a big fan of artist Mark Buehner’s captivating work whose extraordinary illustrations grace the pages of ‘Snowmen At Night’. Thank you to Deep Space Sparkle for the inspiration for this great art workshop!

Mouse City Summit, the Santa Claus Parade and a pat on the back

by Lisa Kelly on Tuesday, December 20th, 2011 at 4:02 pm

I’ve been wanting to post this wee blog for a month now, but obviously time got away from me – with the busy-ness of the season! On Sunday Nov. 18th Julian and myself helped out with Small Print Toronto’s Mouse City Summit at the Gladstone. What a great time it was! The morning’s event was based on ‘housing’ for mice – gathering together urban planners 2-to-8 years old from all across Toronto to conceive, create and construct a “Mouse City” out of recycled household materials. Several different mouse-centric books were read, with the headlining author Rosyln Schwartz, creator of the Mole Sisters, reading her newly launched The Vole Brothers. There was a write up in one of the city’s rags about it, but sadly Art & Soul wasn’t mentioned. That’s okay… We got props from Chris Reed the fab guy behind Small Print Toronto, who hosted and put on the event, so for me that’s enough. “Given how integral you were to the success of yesterday’s city-building event, I was also more than a bit disappointed to see that Jacob did not mention you or link to the Centre For Art & Soul site in his write-up in the Grid.” For anyone who is interested in the article – you can click here. The kids had such a great time, that Julian decided to delay our trek to the Santa Claus Parade and stay late at the Gladstone for more construction fun… Here are a couple of pics taken on the day, and one pic is of Julian enjoying a hot chocolate after the later viewing of the Santa Claus Parade. Thanks again to Small Print Toronto for inviting us. For us, it was a highlight of the season!

We’ll also glue on ribbons, tinsel, decorations, buttons or beads to dress up the bag. ‘Tis the season!
