Playing with Plasticineby Lisa Kelly on Thursday, May 23rd, 2013 at 9:54 am
Sunday May 5th, Art Explorers! Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Upcycled Jewel Cases. We’ve done this project before, but will probably continue as long as there are empty cd cases floating around! CD jewel cases are made with PVC plastic; non-recyclable in most communities. So let’s get crafty and up-cycle unwanted jewel cases into art frames. It’s a great way to keep trash out of the landfill and proudly display our awesome creations! There are many different mediums that will work with these cases, but for this workshop we’ll be using plasticine/modelling clay. A great supportive book to this exercise is authour Barbara Reid’s “Picture a Tree”. The talented Toronto-based artist creates all of her illustrations with plasticine, so we’ll use her style as reference for our pieces. Children are also encouraged to bring in their own Barabara Reid book they’d like to share and read for us! *Please note: Weekend Drop-in/Drop-offs are now only on Sundays. Art Explorers! Sunday Apr. 14th, Art Explorers! Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – This Sunday we are kicking off the class with story telling from books focused on Earth Day and eco-consciousness. After story time, kids will discuss, brainstorm & sketch a rough design of all that planet earth provides for us. For this part 1 class, we’ll be outlining our designs in pencil and sealing the sketch with glue. Then once the glue dries, at the following class (part 2) — we’ll be colouring our designs with chalk pastels. *Please note: Weekend Drop-in/Drop-offs are now only on Sundays. Art Explorers! Tulips have sprouted and it’s time we come out of hibernation. We pick up the litter that’s somehow (??) accumulated over winter, go to the Green Living Show, and look for new ways to reduce our consumption and reinforce planet-saving habits within ourselves. With this theme in mind, all of our art classes in April will all focus on upcycled art. Not that we don’t do this at other times of the year, but Earth Month makes a foundation to build a great student discussion on. Since starting this biz, I can’t throw anything away without seeing it’s art-making potential.
Sunday Apr. 7th, Art Explorers! Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Recycled Robots: For this project we’ll use corrugated cardboard, bottle caps, juice carton lids, wires, buttons, old metal bits, and any other old junk we can get our hands on! Inspiration credit goes Deep Space Sparkle who graciously shared this tutorial. *Please note: Weekend Drop-in/Drop-offs are now only on Sundays. Art Explorers! Sunday Mar. 10th, Art Explorers! Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Monet’s Water Lilies. There is so much to learn and appreciate about the talents of the great artists and their masterpieces. This Sunday’s class we will talk a bit about “Impressionism” and then do our own renditions of Claude Monet’s ‘Water Lilies’. We’ll also read a wonderful story called ‘The Magical Garden of Claude Monet’ written by Laurence Anholt. *Please note: Weekend Drop-in/Drop-offs are now only on Sundays. Art Explorers! Sunday Mar. 3rd, Art Explorers! Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. Perspective and Pastel. A couple years ago, I found a great book at the library called “Big Fat Hen” by Keith Baker. The illustrations are vibrantly drawn with pastels. After doing some research, I discovered that this story has been used by many art teachers – it’s a popular book! So to add some differentiation, I decided to include a bit of theory in my lesson. We’ll talk about perspective – things up close are big; things far away are small, and we’ll also talk about the ‘horizon line’. The children will get to experiment with both oil and chalk pastels (word of warning: the chalk pastels get EVERYwhere, so let’s remember to wear our ‘art’ clothes). The above drawing was done by my son, Julian when he was 6 yrs old. I think it’s gorgeous! Thank you to Deep Space Sparkle for her ideas on teaching this class. *Please note: Weekend Drop-in/Drop-offs are now only on Sundays. Art Explorers! Sunday Feb. 24th, Art Explorers! Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – One of my personal favourite kids’ art workshops: Mandala Art (watercolours and marker). I love doing mandalas with little people. Children really create such stunning designs! A great compliment to the class is the story ‘The Dot’ By Peter H. Reynolds. It’s the perfect book to inspire a discussion about dots and circles and the art of creating mandalas. We’ll watercolour paint our circles first, and then later doodle with pen and ink to add detail to the mandala. Looking forward to another fantastic mandala making workshop! Not to mention a blissed-out, zen-calm class! I wonder!? *Please note: Weekend Drop-in/Drop-offs are now only on Sundays. Art Explorers! Workshop (4 yrs +) 10:15 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. See you there!
