Intro to Pop Art

Sunday May 6th, Art Explorers! Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Andy Warhol’s Pop Art. I can’t believe it’s taken me this long to do a ‘Pop Art’ workshop. This is the art I grew up on. I was especially influenced by the movement while studying Graphic Design at George Brown College in the mid ’80s (I am aging myself). This workshop discusses some basic print-making techniques – etching designs in recycled styrofoam containers (trying to make the best of a bad situation – will these please be outlawed someday?) and using lino block ink. My students on Wednesday really enjoyed this project as you can see from the image above!

Earth Day Collage

Sunday Apr. 22nd, Art Explorers! Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Painted Newspaper Collage. I really love the look of painted paper. At the end of last week’s art class, I had the kids paint a bunch of recycled newspapers. I thought this could be a good springboard for talking about Earth Day and how when we re-use and recycle – we can make or ‘upcycle’ some beautiful creations. So on Sunday we’ll rip up the painted paper, and decoupage our collage! Afterward, we’ll add some finishing touches such as wispy clouds or – like in the case of my after school art class – add cherry blossoms with paint! Aren’t these stunning?

Birds and Fairies

Saturday Apr. 14th, Art Explorers! Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Bird Feeders & the Fairy House. About a month ago I pulled an unopened, never-before-assembled dollhouse from my garage. It was donated to Art & Soul by a friend a long time ago, and I wasn’t sure what to do with it. Then I got the idea to transform it into a ‘Fairy House’, after seeing an amazing one on a visit to Encinitas, CA (see picture) a couple of years ago. Spring is here, there is no denying it. Magnolia trees are in full bloom along with the cherry blossoms throughout our neighbourhood. Birds are singing beautiful songs and the robins who visit our front lawn are looking rather plump! So it seems timely to begin a bit of work outside amongst the beauty. Weather permitting we will begin construction of our Fairy House outside, if not — will be painting, decorating and building in the art room. We will make bird feeders for the fairy house, as well as feeders for children to take home and stick on a tree branch in their own yard!

Earth Hour Inspiration

Saturday Mar. 24th, Art Explorers! Kids Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Upcycled Art. Inspired by Earth Hour which is happening next Saturday at 8:30 p.m., I’d like to talk to the kids about why it’s important to participate in it. I’d also like to touch on things we can do to help the planet in other ways as well. CD jewel cases are made with PVC plastic; non-biodegradable and non-recyclable in most communities. So during this workshop we’ll up-cycle unwanted jewel cases into art frames. It’s a great way to keep trash out of the landfill and proudly display our awesome creations! There are many different mediums that will work with these cases, but for this workshop we’ll be using homemade play-dough. A great supportive book to this exercise is authour Barbara Reid’s “Picture a Tree”. The talented Toronto-based artist creates all of her illustrations with plasticine, so we’ll use her style as reference for our pieces.

In addition, another activity we’ll do is recycle old broken crayons into new ones. Please bring your old stubby crayons and everyone will go home with new ones!

Dad’s Day Pen Pots

Saturday June 18th, Multi-Medium Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. Pencil Holders. During this last-of-the-season (boo-hoo!) workshop we’ll be re-using and recycling anything we can get our hands on and gluing them to some hefty cardboard tubes to make pretty pencil holders. Beads? We got ‘em. Ribbon? Check. The list is endless. Bring ‘em all together and we’ve got the makings for a great gift for dear old Dad!

ART Journals!

Sunday June 12th, Multi-Medium Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. Two reasons for Art Journals this week. 1) It’s our 2nd last class of the season and I thought these would be great for the kids to add entries to over the summer. Sort of a ‘What I did over the Summer ’11 – in pictures’ type of journal. 2) I’ve found that the most popular activity in our art class is where the kids get to create on the fly. Doodling and drawing random pictures are EXACTLY what Art Journals are for. This class we will decorate the cover personalizing it with our names and drawings of ourselves.

The Tao of Weaving

Saturday June 4th, Multi-Medium Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. – 11:45 a.m. In this workshop children will learn how to weave using recycled yarn and fabric in combination with objects found in nature (twigs, long grass). I came across this quote on the internet and it really struck a chord with me (sadly I cannot find the author now to give credit): “In the Tao of craft, weaving is our breath- in and out, back and forth, inhalation and exhalation. Weaving brings together the physical activity of our hands, with our thoughts in the planning of our project, our emotions in our color and materials choices, and the spiritual, in the act of creation.  We can all benefit from the rhythmic quality of weaving that influences our own breathing patterns, slowing us down and bringing us into closer relation with our work.” I think this weaving project will be great after our yoga class too!

Gardening Goodness

Sunday May 15th Multi-Medium Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Painted Flower Pots. After an extremely long winter, we’ve finally arrived at the time we’ve all been awaiting! ‘Tis the season for sowing seeds and nurturing new growth. In this workshop, students will paint and decorate flower pots. We’ll even plant some seeds in soil!

All About Mom

Saturday May 7th Mixed-Media Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Decoupage Vases. I don’t know any mother who doesn’t love getting flowers from their little ones – especially on Mother’s Day! This workshop we’ll be making vases to put those much adored flowers in.

Mad About Mosiac

Sunday May 1st Mixed-Media Art Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Recycled Card Mosaic Frames. There’s something about the texture, colour and patterning to the look of mosiac art that I’m really attracted to. And I have always wanted to do an art workshop on it. But after researching, I found it to be an expensive and possibly difficult project to do as a ‘one-off’ with kids. UNTIL I came across a great alternative on Art Projects for Kids. She used old gift and credit type cards to use for the mosiac. GENIUS! So I am now very excited to try this project with my students on Sunday! It’s drop-in and drop-off, so treat yourself and a friend to brunch at Cowbell, and drop the kids with us!

Rockin’ Robots!

Saturday Jan. 29th, Multimedia Art For Kids Workshop: 10:15 a.m. ‘til 11:45 a.m. – Robot Recyclables. Body parts for this robot project was a cinch to gather together. In fact – since starting this business, I think I’ve sorta become a bit of a (yikes) hoarder. I can’t throw anything away without seeing it’s art-making potential. For this project we’ll use corrugated cardboard, bottle caps, juice carton lids, wires, buttons, old metal bits etc., etc. The kids absolutely LOVED making their robots during my Thursday after-school class. It was fun to listen to how their creations became characters with back stories and names. Rockin’ robot good times! I found the idea on Deep Space Sparkle and used her tutorial. *Please note: Weekend Drop-in/Drop-offs now alternate between Saturdays and Sundays.
